Level Crossing Dangers.
(To the motoring editor.)
Dear Sir,
In view of the danger which, as is well known, always exiṣtá at places where railway lines cross motor roads, I should be glad If you could find room in your valuablo columns for the publication of the following instance which occurred Inear to Shatin.
I recently took an evening drive, before dinner, along the Taipo Rond and atopped for a smoke a few yards before reaching the second railway crossing. After a short time, when darkness had fullen, a bell suddenly clanged loudly and the noise of an approaching train was heard in the distance. A Chinese employee come out of the hut nearby and lowered the gates across the road, meanwhile carrying a green lantern. The train thundered by and when it had gone the Chinese ifted the gates to clear the road, then carrying a red lan- [tern. When the operator had lift- fed or lowered the gates he vanished' in the shadows, taking the light with him and leaving no indication at all just before the train arrived and passed. Furthermore there were no lights on the gates.
Hence when the gates were be- ing lower a motorist approaching from Shatin would have seen the all clear signal and when the road was being cleared he would have teen the danger signal. Any motorist approaching a few seconds before the train passed would have: had to rely entirely on his own light- Ing power or the noise and smoke of the train to know or guess that the zates were down.
It also seemed that there was far too little time allowed between the time of the warning of, approach (and the train's actual crossing, of Pho rond, this being especially im- fportant when it is remembered that The construction of the pro- there is a corner on each ́ sido of have been due to the reason that posed elevated express highway the crossing. they were not members of the along the Hudson in New York, Traffic Staff, but we should say has had the final approval of the substantial red lights be shown on The practical suggestion is that become enthusiasts of the small The deafening din created in the that in such cases, any member of board of estimates.
