To mention, for instance, that a man was under the suspicion of being a common crook and to suppress the adili- ilonal fact that he had been tried for it and had, even in the opinion of the vast majority of his ac- cusers, been completely cleared of the charge, is a type of conduct which people generally class amongst sing against truth.

It would be very easy to develop Strauss's argument and to show the full implications contained in' the theory which would explain the Resurrection on the supposi tion that Jesus merely pretended that He had been dead and that He had risen again: for this theory cannot hold together at all unleas we suppose Christ to be a common knave and decelver, and indeed requires us to class His intimate followers In the same category. But to what purpose?
