THE HONGKONG TELEGRAPH,

BANKNOTE CASE.

FOUR COMMITTED OUT OF

- ORIGINAL FIFTEEN,

The Magisterial hearing of the case in which a number of Chinose are charged with uttering forged Hongkong and Shanghai Bank notes was concluded before Mr. R. E. Lindsell at the Central Magia- tracy yesterday afternoon. Four of the five remaining defondants were committed for trial at this month's Criminal Seselors, while the fifth, a Chinese woman who had been figuring in the case as the second defendant, was dis- -charged, case against her ink dropped having regard to her status as the wife of one of the other defendants. ·

For the husband, who is named as the first defendant, Mr. F. H. Loseby offered no statement, reserving his defence for the Ses-, sions trial.

The charge against this defen- dant of being in possession of a printing outfit was dropped, but an order was made for the confis- cation of the apparatus. The remaining counts on which he was now committed were in respect of (1) possession of four copper impression plates, (2) poskession of other plates for the reproduction of a Central Bank $10-note, (8) conspiring with Chan Wing, one of the men not in custody, and others to utter forged notes pur- porting to be. those of the $50 denomination of the Hongkong and Shanghai Bank, and (4) possession of a revolver.

Missing Man's Wife.

The sixth defendant, who is one of the two women charged in the case, admitted that she was the wife of Chan Wing, whom the prosecution had dubbed the "arch- conspirator" in the affair. She was represented by Mr. A. E. Hall, and now stated, in examination by her solicitar, that on the day in question he wont to see her hus- band for the sole purpose of gut- ting houré money. She said she was compelled by the polica to lead them to a woodpile near her house at Lamont Lane, where the 40 förgel poles secreted within the heart of the pile were subsequent- ly discovered.

On her behalf, Mr. A. E. Hall cited as an analogy a Home ense in which a husband was presumed fo be in possession of stolen money found in the joint possession of keth husband and wife,

Mr.Lindsell agreed to make a note of the point, in relation to the first count of the defendant bhing charged with the pussession of the forged notes in the woodpile. His Worship found that she had in strong case to answer in reln- tion to the other count of con-. gilracy to utter, on the ground that she was present at the trans- action and took part in the con- versation with the detectives who posed na buyers.

She was committed for trial on both charges.

A Bright Statement. The seventh defendant who was not represented legally, was com- mitted for trial on charges of being in possession of the 40 forged notes and of conspiring with Chan Wing and olhers to utter. the forged notes.

He asked to be given permis- sion to make a statement and when this was granted, merely said: 1 don't know anything about the notes, That is all.

His Worship: That is all? That is a bright statement.

The eighth defendant was also committed on charges of posses- sion of one forged $50 note and of conspiracy to utter. On his behalf. Mr. Leo d'Almada e Castro, Jar., intimated that his defence at the Sessions would be that the defendant did not know the notes were forged, that he denied aiding Chan Wing, and that evidence of hia character would be called.

This closed the Magisterial stage of the case.

Fifteen defendants were orl ginally charged, of whom the number has been whittled down to four, who have been now com- miltted.
