ENGLAND BEATS CHINA.

LOSERS' BIG EFFORT IN SECOND HALF.

GOLDMAN SCORES. THREE GREAT GOALS.

SPLENDID FOOTBALL.

[By Wanderer."]

For a period of approximately twenty minutes in the second half of the International Charity Cup match yesterday, after England had secured a lond of 3 goals to one, the Chinese were definitely on top, their fast thrusting forward line all but overcoming the staunch England defence. With the slightest luck, the brillant com bination and quick movements of the Chinese at this stage would have altered the whole complexion of the game, but they scored only once, and just when Wynne and his colleagues were beginning to falter in the face of persistent and clever attacks, the byrat expended || itself and England recovered to win handsomely by four goals to

CRICKET NOTES.

GOLF IN CANTON.

The Tung Shan Championship was won on Sunday by Mr. J. C. H.. Bonbright, the American Vice- Consu).

Played over 38 holes on the Tungehan Recreation's Club's Course at Tung Shan, Canton, it was evident from early in the game that Mr. Bonbright would get away with it easily, He even made a record match score for the first nine holes, doing the round in 33, His opponent, Mr. A. It is hoped that the cry for brighter crickel hère has been answered and that this state of affairs will continué, as players are beginning to realise that, the time at their disposal to win a game is more limited in the months of December and January than it was at the connoncement of the season.

One wonders whether it is duo to lack of practice or that their keenness for cricket is on the wane, but the display of the Pok- fulam students on that day, is certainly not the form of a cham- pion XI. Never at any time a strong batting olde, their fielding too, left a lot to be desired. I hear Abbas of the I.R.C., who is not regarded as good enough for a regular placo in his team, bowl- ed uncommonly well and had the "Varsity batsmen tied up for the most part.

In the Senior Division,. Civil Service upset calculations at Kow. loon. Frequent change of bowling by the home captain had no effect on Sayer, de Rome and Barrow who were all in splendid batting form. I was A., E. Wood, how ever, who scaled the fate of the K.C.C. na far as a victory for the latter side'was concerned. Wood, going in second wicket down, re-known names like Mitchell, Evers, With the inclusion of well- nained undefeated with 59 to his credit in an excellent innings dur- ing which he reproduced a little of his form of ten and Afteen years ago when he was one of the stalwarts of the Civil Service team.

With almost two hundred runs to make, Kowloon C.C. could not have hoped for a win, but they were not deprived of the whole was an extraordinarily in three points. An all-round convincing display was given by the winners' defence, and if the forwards were not quite up to the same standard; they had Bvely leader, who worried the hacks constantly, and scored three perfect goals.

After an exceptionally poor start-Hay ward, Moor and Quick were all out cheaply the Club mastered the bowling of the Chinese and ran up the useful total of 167 for seven. The home team's bat- ting, always weak, crumbled be fore the bowling of Dobble, Wales and Bowker. Tad Wai-pui saved his side from setting up a new record for the lowest acare this season by hitting up more than half of the total of 43, of the but.

The Junior champions, Univer- sity seconds, cape a cropper against Indian R.C. 2nd XI. The Sookumpoo team had a very strong side out and expected to be fully extended but found the 'Varsity very much lielow their form of last year when they wrested the' championship in such great style. A. S. Suffiad (40) and Aekber (20) both of whom were unfortunately run out, changed the complexion of the game from their side's point of view. They were somewhat subdued at the commencement but soon knocked the sting out of the (Continued on Next Column)

The Chinese fielded a phore or less experimental side, Including no fewer than six South China players. With but one exception, the changes were fully justified, and the new blood gave the Chinese team a life that has not been apparent for some time past. England began with great dash and it was not long before the lead had been secured, Goldman heading through smartly from a centre by Barkham. Soon after- wards, Goldman netted a second in almost the same way, though on this occasion the ball came from the left. China undismayed by these early setbacks, replied with series of warm attacks, but Wynne and Baker were in splen- did form, and it was not until a minute before the interval that Fung King-cheong reduced the Bead with a nicely placed shot. The second half opened quietly but. within ten minutes England ·went for. ther ahead.
