WRONG ARREST.

MAGISTRATE AND 'NO POWERS' TO GRANT COSTS.

The case in which it was said that a mistake in identity had been made by the principle witness for the prosecution came before Mr. Grabam Campbell at Bow-street recently.

Mr. Barüogh Hegdis, 68 of Pelorin-road, Stoke Newington, was charged with stealing £5,000 from George Fredk. Longhurst by means of a trick. The charge, concerned the alleged substitution of worthless stones for diamonds valued at £7,000.

It was stated on behalf of the prosecution that it was quite obvious now that Mr. Hegdis was not the man' referred to in the warrant, He was arrested in con- sequence of information given to the police, but was not in any Renao charged by the prosecutor.

The magistrate said the Public Prosecutor did not intervena in the case. He would therefore accedo to the alleation of Mr. J. Harris, who appeared for the prosecutor, that the case should be withdrawn, Mr. Wickham (for Mr. Hegdis) alled for costs, but the magis- trate refused, and suld, he had no power to deal with costs,

ני

Asked to say that Mr. Iegdis left the court without a stain on his character, the magistrate sold. It was quite sußclent to accede to the application that he be dis charged.
