with the statement that "the Brl- tish taxpayer would have to pay altogether about £4,000,000 on ac- evant of the (Shanghai) Defence Force, and the Government fell that what could be done locally should be done." Divorced from its context, I venture to think that this abridged sentence conveya on impression which was not intend-, ed by the speaker. For the bene-"Last fit of your readers who may be interested in the subject I would feel grateful if you would, allowEvening Star" me to add one or two observations! which seem necessary if the pict- "Felix The ure is to be viewed in correct per- spective. The payment of some £4,000,000 is a small enough in- surance premium if one considers the value to the British taxpayer] of the trade which he had at stake. Further, had this Defence Force) not be sent when it was, it now generally conceded that the British taxpayer would have found himself faced with the necessity of financing an infinitely larger military expenditure than incurred. The bare statement that "the Government felt that what could be done loendly should be done" I cannot believe was intended as criticism of the aetion or conduct; of British residents in China. The great sacrifices that have been made by our fellow-countrymen there in the past few years, the loss of personal property they have inetiered, the danger which they have cheerfully faced, and the ignominy to which they have "Le Coq D'Or," so often been exposed have been

YAUMATI ROBBERY.
FIVE YEAR SENTENCES FOR TWO NARBOUR CHINESE.
The story of a robbery on board sampun at Yaumati Typhoon Shelter, when two of the men jumped into the water to escape but were captured, while a third, man got away, was told at the Criminal Sessions yesterday after- moon, before the Chief Justice (Sir Heary Gollan).
A charge of robbery by tivo or more was preferred against the two captured men, Pun Tak' and Ko Cho. They were alleged to have bourded the sampan, No. 4163V, with another unknown, on October 29 and robbed Fan Mei of a purse containing a gold ring and $140 in money.
Mr. Somerset Fitzroy, who pro- secuted for Ure Crown, stated that the affair occurred ut about uine o'clock at night. The prisoners apparently hired, a boat to take them alongside the sampan, which was lying next to n coal hulk. Between that bulk and the shore there were other hulka, so that a person could reach land from the sampan by going from one hulk to another,
When the three men boarded the sampan, continued counsel, they teld. Fan Mei that they were searching for opium or contraband. They searched, the boat but found nothing so they started to search the woman on whoth they found the purse and its contents. The second prisoner handed the purse to the unknown man who promptly made his escape to the shore and got away. The woman raised the
alarm and her husband, who was

When charged at the police station, the first prisoner statud that he was standing near whon someone pushed him into the water, while the second man said that he know nothing about it. He had stated that he went there to borrow money from someons, on one of the boats.
His Lordship remarked he saw there was an allegation that one man had a revolver, and asked if such a weapon was found,
Mr. Fitzroy replied in the negative, adding that nothing of an incriminating nature was found 'on either of the "mun,*****
Mr. Fitzroy concluded by stating that at the Magistracy both men made long statements to the effect
The complainant, in giving evi- denco, said that she received the $140 from a Money Loan Associa- tion drawing,
Her husband stated that he watched tho robbers' movements while he was squatting on another boat and did not take a hand until his wife cried out.
At the close of the evidence, the jury found both the prisoners guilty and his Lordship, address- ing the latter, said he fully agreed] with the verdict of the fury and that his only healtation was whe ther he should order them to be flogged. As the prisonons, had not hurt anybody, his Lordship would not make the order.
Sentence of five years' Imprison-| ment with hard labour was then passed on each of the men,
