This striking picture of a volcano in eruption shows Mt. Vesuvius, Mt. Etun's fiery neighbour, in action, Deep, rumbling explosions accompany the flow of lava from the amoking crater. The lower picture shows a wall of moving lava, pushing irresistibly onward at a speed of about five miles an hour, and burying overything in its path.

Berlin, Nov. 7. The second day's sale of Soviet art treasures by Messrs. Lepke took place. this morning, under the watchful eye of the Court Bailir,j who was present throughout the proceedings.

This functionary was sent by the Court in order to safeguard the execution of an Interim Injunc- tion obtained on behalf of fourteen; dispossessed Russians to restrain the sale of sundry statues and pic-{ Lures which they claimed as theirs..

Among the claimants are Prince Jussopon, Count Alexis Bobrinskot, Prined Serge Dulorukatt, Prince Umitri Obolenski, Countess Solo- güb, und ten others who obtained] their injunctions jointly Just even- ing, following upon Prince Kotro- mantiz's succesful appeal earlier in the day. The auctioneers open-. ed this morning's proceedings by announcing the action of the Court. They thought to waive aside the whole matter with a jest to the effect, that several Princes, were claiming the same object, and optimistically declared that after further court formalities they would put up the withdrawn arli- cles to auction in a few days.

When they came to enumerating some of the withdrawn articles they had to confess that the piece de ré- sistance of the whole day's sale was among them, namely, the picture. Titus Rembrandt as a Boy," by Nicolas Maes, which they had esti- mated to fetch 35,000 murks, not to mention three important pic-}| tures by Hubert 'Robert and two by Francois Boucher, whose with- drawal was a particulur disappoint- ment to the French buyers. The announcement was received with a chorus of "Ah" from all parts of the hall.

Proceeds Impounded,

The estimated value of the 19: pictures and four sculptures which were impounded by the bailiff Im- mediately after the Anle won 215,000 marks. In addition to these articles there are about 80 separate objects to which the In-) junction applies and which were al-J ready sold yesterday. In respect of these the bailiff has taken a short cut by impounding the proceeds in money,

Meanwhile, the legal actions had no visible effects on the course of bidding this morning. The sculp tures went cheaply, but the pictures fotched-unexpectedly high prices; and the total for the day reached 741,000 marks or 284,000 marks than the estimates. The
