PENINSULA HOTEL OPENING.

H. E. ON THE FUTURE OF KOWLOON.

A FINE BUILDING.

There was a huge attendance of guests at the opening of the Peninsula Hotel yesterday after- noon, the ceremony being perform- ed

H. E, the Officer Administer- Ing the, Government, who was necompanied by Mrs. Southern. In the course of his speech, Hla Excellency pald' ચી warm tribute to the courageous optimism of Mr. J. H. Tag- gart, without whom there would have been no Peninsula Hotel, and cited the completion of the build ing na proof of the fact that the courage of our forefathers is still with us. He also spoke glowingly of the future of Kowloon.

After the opening ceremony, the guests made a tour of inspection of the Hotel (a full description of which, with illustrations, was pub. lished as an art supplement by the Telegraph last Saturday), and all were delighted with the sumptuous decorations and the modernity of the general equipment,

His Excellency together with Mrs. Southern arrived promptly at 4.30 p.m. and, after entering

Behind the Scenes.

I cannot, however, refrain from availing myself of this oppor tunity the most fitting occasion for the purpose of thanking and congratulating the Company's Hotel Superintendent, Mr. J. P. Bourne, on the result of the stu- pendous amount of labour he has bestowed on the multifarious de- tails relating to the equipment of this establishment and its ser- vice. His unrelaxed efforts which have covered a very extend- ed period of time-in planning and supervising the infinite variety of minute details involved are very largely responsible for our being able to present to you to day an establishment containing the most modern hotel equipment and hygienic appliances to an ex- tent without parallel in this part. of the world,

"A Chequered Career.".

The Peninsula Hotel has, during the period of its construction, ex- perienced a somewhat chequered career, in that much has happened to delay its progress towards the realisation of the hopes of those. responsible for its inception, its erection and the ceremony which Your Excellency is so kindly per- forming. I would like to mention. here that the last incident in the foregoing relation is one upon which we look back with feelings of pride. I refer to the many months during which we had the honour of housing a large portion. of H. M., Forces, forming part of the Expeditionary Force despatch- ed hither by the Home Government

After spee- ches were made by Mr. Taggart and by His Excellency, the official party was conducted to the top 1loor where ten was served in the Bauquetting Hall. On the same floor, in the Roof Garden a num- ber of visitors enjoyed the Hotel's band, and dancing was in during the troubloux. times in the full swing shortly after the open-early part of 1927. ·

The band of the King's Own Scottish Borderers, by permission of Lt. Col. L. J. Comyn, C.M.G., 1.8.0., rendered a pleasing selec- tion of music from the terrace on the first floor.
