THE HONGKONG TELEGRAPH,

A NOBLE CAUSE.

APPEAL FOR SOCIETY OF ST. VINCENT DE PAUL.

The Rev. Fr. Joy, S. J., during the course of his sermon at St. Joseph's Church yesterday morn- Ins, referred to the forthcoming sale of rases and bazaar in alá of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul.

Ho antd:

On Saturday next, Dec. 1, the sale of rosea in aid of the St.

Vincent de Paul Society will take place in Hongkong. His Lordship the Bishop appeals to all the faith ful to make this the occasion of generous contribution to a noble

cause.

And surely it is a noble cause! "Master, what is the great com- mmandment of the Lord!" they ask ed of Christ and the answer came "Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with thy whole heart and with thy whole soul and with thy whole mind. This is the first and groa test commandment, and the second Is like to this. Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. On theac two depend the whole law and the prophets."

St. John furnishes us with a commentary on these command-

is

ments. "If any man any I love God and hateth his neighbour he liar. For he that loveth not his neighbour whom he aceth, how can he love God whom he seeth not, and this commandment wo have received from God that he who lovell God, loves also his neighbour." In another place, St. John explains it thus: "In this is charity, not as though we loved God, but because God first loved us and sent his son to be a pro- pitiation for our sins. If God has Bo loved us, we ought also to love one another."

We are all of God's family. As well may you claim the affection of a father or mother whilst you show hatred to their children as

expect to be loved by God if you do not love his children. All are God's children. He loves all. "Can a woman forget her infant so as not to take pity on the child of her womb-yet even if she should, I will not forget you,” no He speaks to all his children.

Devoted Workers.

This is the fundamental prin- ciple of Christian charity. Against this background I would ask you to place your own conduct and nsk yourselves earnestly, and honestly am living up to this principle of charity? Remember that Christ's own words leave us un- der no doubt as to the importance of the answer. On the last day he will say to the blessed "Come ye blessed of my Father, possess the kingdom prepared for you... for was hungry and you gave me to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me to drink, was a stranger and you took me in, Baked and, you covered me, sick and you visited me. was in prison and you came to me."

And lie explains the words thus: "Anien, 1 say to you, whatsoever you did to the least of these my brethren, you did it unto Mis."

Now it hardly needs proof that for one reason or another not all Christians can peraónally devote their service to the poor, but it is also clear that when we have body of Christians who gives such service it should be regarded as a privilege by all to be allowed to help them in their service. Such a body of devoted workers is the Society of St. Vincent de Paul. The brothers of the Society silently and unobserved find their way into the poorest quartera of our city, they pass through the narrow lanes, climb the narrow and dark staircases in the housea of the pour, enter the sick room room which, houses a

or the

family whom fortune has dealt hard with. They hear their trouble, enquire as methode of relieving them, give words, of consolation and of hope, and re- tire leaving behind them hearts still broken by sorrow and adver Hity, it is true, but buoyed up by the hope that if human assistite is possible it will come to them and come quickly. And even if it does not come, even if the Society zaust send back its brother to tell this sorrow-broken family that assistance de beyond their power,

at any rate they are strengthened to hear their troubles by the con- scleusaces that other hearts feel deeply with them in their sorrow and would gladly bring them, the comfort and the consolation of Christ their Mastor,

Some years ago I came across the life story of a member of the So- cloty of St. Vincent de Paul Amongst his private papers was found the following piece of writ- ing:

"What more glorious than to be blessed by the Broken-hearted and the down-trodden; to have one's name woven into the daily prayers of the widow and the waifs; it he a staff to the weak, a comfort to the disconsolate; a blessing toj allt What is there more gratify- hy than to feel that our life has been really worth livrig, that the world is richer for it,that it will creaté à void when we drop away. that we will be sorely missed when we are no more, and that the grave containing our earthly rul mains will be bedewed by fervant tears of gratitude?, Let us then be generous, expansive, brond in sympathy and love; let our hands be extended in good fellowship to all. Let us sow kindness and reap love ever as Christ did; and by so doing, we will prove ourselves worthy brothers of the St. Vincent de Paul Society.".

The ok woman and the 'man were both brought before. Mr. Lindseil on Saturday, and charged with possession of the drug. The swor the charge, admitted that the woman, who was first asked to an- drug was in her house, but claim- ed that the man left it there. This, the man flatly dented.

His Worship next asked the old ANNUAL MOTOR CAR DRAW woman why she was willing to accept the drug into her house, to which the old woman replied that the man had informed her that it would only be deposited there for a night. She admitted in answer to another question that she had the opium in her charge and that was explained by the fact that she was getting "mad with age."

His Worship then imposed a sentence of $5,000 or in default six months hard labour on the

woman. Addressing old young man hls Worship sald that he should consider himself lucky that there was no evidence against him and that he could go. The opium was ordered to be confiscat- ed.
