£20,000 FOR A HOUSEKEEPER.
SURPRISE FORTUNE IN VICAR'S WILL.
Miss Jane Hayes, clergyman's housekeeper, has been bequeathed the unexpectedly large fortune of over £20,000 by her employer.
Thirty-four years ago when shu left school she entered the service of the Rev. Tertius Buzzard, and eventually became his housekeeper! Laut January, Mr. Bazzard, who had been vicar of Grimsargh, meir Preston, since 1889, died, and his estate has totalled £26,726 gross value. Except for £100 and a few other bequests, he has, left every- thing to Miss Hayes
"for her long and faithful ser- vice."
Misa Hayes, a young-looking woman of tractive but retiring demeanour, is now living with her parents and sister at Grasmere- villas, Grimsurgh, writes a Daily Chronicle representative. When I called she was rather upset that the nows of the will should have been published.

A day or so before he became ill, Mrs. Simpkins, died and left her money to him. This gum added very considerably to Mr. Buzzard's estate.
It is stated that Misa Hayes has) Intimated that she feels mortally bound to carry out certain oblign- Hons which Mr. Buzzard would pro- bably have recognised had he had time to learn of his added wealth and to have made arrangements ac- cordingly.
"She has always been a retiring and kindly person," a friend of M Hayes told me. "She had always gone to church regularly and then gone quietly back to her duties at the vicarage."

CITY SOLICITOR SUED FOR CONVERSION.
I.C. ON LOSSES OF NEARLY £1,000,000.
Major Peter David Thomas, Bemor partner in a firm of City of London solicitors, was aued in the High Court recently for damages for alleged wrongful converalon, breach of duty and negligence.
Mr. Norman Birkett, K.C.,, repre- sented the plaintiffs, who were the Penton Textile Association, Lid., of which Major Thomas was director.
#
The association allege that, al though Major Thomas knew, that Mr. Fenton had no right to deal with the assets of the asscelation for his own purposes, he received through Fenton large sums of money, which he knew were, the the funds of the association, and applied them to Fenton's private;
игровая.
All the allegations were dented. by Major Thomas, who said he diu not know of the true state of affairs, between Mr. Fenton and the associa tion.
Mr. Birkett said the association: was not saying that Major Thomas | converted the money for his own purposes, but they did bay that I was idle for him to say he did not know the position.
"I should imagine," added. Mr. Birkett, "that it will not be con- tested that through the account at the defendante, a sum of £1,000,000 passed within two years. The greater portion of this sum has been lost to the association."
Mr. Birkett also stated that with- in three and a half years the as- sociation had a trading loss of £1,750,000,
The hearing was adjourned.
