NEW
FORD FEATURES.
No. 4.--The Generator.
Among the distinctive features contributing to make the new Ford car an outstanding automobile is the new type generator.
Although extremely simple in design it is a railleal departure from the conventional tpye. It is designed to eliminato generator trouble, while at the same time ils efficiency is greatly increased. With average care, it will outlast the life of the ear.
The armature is mounted on two oversize ball bearings, one on the pulley and another just beyend the contre. There is no bearing on the commutator end. Grease Contained in a reservoir between the bearings lubricates both, and thus eliminates the possibility of oll reaching
the commutator, which heretofore frequently caused gumming-up and shorting. One filling of lubricant is sufficient for the life of the generator.
The armature coils are fully

'CORKSCREW' CLIMB.
Interesting Event in
Norway...
A few miles outalde Oslo, the capital of Norway, which the re cent Artic drama has rendered famillarovon to those whose strong point is not geography, at Frognerseteren the annual Hill Climb organised by the Norwegian Royal Automobile Club took placo on September 29th. The leading European and American makes of cara were represented, amongst the entranta being; Bugatti, Amfl- car, Chrysler, Flat, Reo, Stutz, | Cadillac, Ford, etc.
The weather being fine, a largo crowd assembled and the loading motorists also came out from Oslo for the occasion. The race was a brilliant affair from start to. finfsh, the competing cars attack- ing the climb with rent dash and verve, which was sustained all the way up.
In the 1,500 c.c. class the results were as follows:-

course, there is a remarkable differ. ence between the wire wheel of tho late '90's and today. In the carlier period the automobile inherited its wheels from the bicycle. Fragilo: and subjected to a host of troubles, these wheels got by because they did not have an enormous torque to absorb.
Even multiplo disc clutches were used in motordom's dawn. Back in 1906, a newcomer on the market boasted not only of this feature but also that he offered engine, clutch and transmission built as a unit. That, too, has a familiar ring in 1928.
In thinking over the features that the early ears certainly did not have, ono is almost certain to light upon the rumble seat. But, even this guess is wrong. Except for the fact that it was called a fold- ing seat "espable of carrying two extra passengers," the ramble seat was to be found on the 1906 run- about of a famous car maker..
As To Materials,
An to materials used in car con- struction, the automobile advertis- ing of 1898 and 1929 reads much alike. The specifications of most of the latest models descriptive of the front axle read:
"Drop-forged, 1-beam."
They read that, word for word back in the first years of the pros- ent century,
High carbon steel also was tho special boast of the early motor car mnker. He used it in shafts, gears,

One of the things about which definite one hears today with a sense that it is distinctly new, la "the growing use of aluminum in engine units." As a matter of fact, the present application of aluminum is new, but it was used in motor car buliding as early as 1894. To- day, it appears in pistons and con- necting rods, Then It was used in cylinders and the crankcase.
