Is There A Speed.

Limit?

How fast can an automobile got This question, it is believed by General Motors engineers, will nover be definitely answered. For all practical purposes the automo- bile's speed has been developed får enough, but in the opinion of the automotivo ongineera there is real. ly no limit to the speed of a motor car under proper conditions. ***** When Ray Keech, holder of the world's automobile speed record, pushed the mark up to 207.55 miles an hour with the famous Triplex at Raytona Beach, Flórida, passing the amazing record of 200.95 sot by Captain Malcolm Campbell, hei caused only a slight flurry of excitement in the motor world. Automotive exports novor get excited over a broken speed record, because they know it will soon be surpassed.

The theoretically highest speed of a racing automobile is its velocity under certain perfect con- ditions, according to the experts. The nerves and skill of the driver, the conditions of the course, and the atmospheric conditions must be at their best. The motor must function perfectly and every part of the car must stand up under the strain of extreme mechanically induced velocities. The course too must be long enough to permit the car to have reached its highest velocity at the time it enters on its titted mile.

The theoretically fastest car is one which has the most powerful engine that could be built and is so designed that the atmospheric resistance which it encounters by reason of Its terrific velocity has been reduced to the lowest theoretical minimum. In addition It must be so designed that It will hold to the course.

It is the opinion of designers of racing cars that a speed of 250. miles an hour will some day be altained. Some of them say the Bpeed will climb to 300 miles per hour and there are those who be- lieve that somebody will bulld a car of limitless speed. The latter group believes that there is no limit if the power can be increased and wind resistance reduced, Thone are the two factors that limit the speed of the motor car, they contend. They do not mean that there will be a car without; nctual speed mit-that there is no dendline in the rate of automo- TOTOR buses in California are bile velocity.
