WAR MYSTERY OF HILL 70.

WHO ORDERED TROOPS,

WITHDRAWAL?...--

One of the many mysteries of the war-the partial evacuation of H 70 by the 15th. Division. In 1915-19 revealed in volume IV. of the "latory of the Great War (Military Operations: France and Belgium, 1915)."

Macmillan, 12s. 6d.. published recently,

The message which brought this withdrawal about cannot now be discovered nor can its origin be definitely found.

What is certain is that about 3 p.m. a message, not preserved, said to have been brought by a man of the 15th Division Signal Company from Loos, was handed to an officer in the thinly-held lino of the 45th and 46th Brigade, still on the western slopes of H 70.

Note Ignored, ' The message was to the affect that the line of the old German tranches between Vermelles Halluch and Bethune-Lens road was to he hold. This involved a withdrawal.

The officer to whom the message with its signature torn off) was handed declined to take any action. He forwarded the mysterious message and a summary of its contents to his senior.

The message was ignored "ha there seemed to be no necessity for n withdrawal, but on the arrival of the summiary by another runner, the senior officer regarded it as confirmatory of the first, instead of as a duplente, and though still seeing no reason to retire, he felt that the order must be connected with Home more comprehensive operation which he was not in a ponition to understand,

He was finally confirmed in this view by the return of a messenger whom he had sent to Brigade II.Q. returning with the envelope un- opened and marked "Gone back to Vermelles,"

Verbal orders for withdrawal from Hill 70 were then acted upon. A most searching investigation as to the cause of the unnecessary withdrawal from the hill and as to the origin of the message threw no light on the mystery.
