WOMAN'S WORLD

FOR OUR LADY READERS.

My Selfish Mother.

[By A Modern Daughter.]

"A Modern Mother" is right; somo daughters arè abominably solfish, But so are some mothers.

Let me describe my own case. My mother was, and is, very pretty gay, pleasure-loving, and popular with men. She married at 10. I was born when she was only 20, and now at 40 she finds herself, a comparatively young widow, and- dled with a grown-up daughter,

Alone, with her still elim figure, her complexion preserved by skil- ful masange and every other device that care and money can suggest, aho would pass for a handsome wo- man in her early thirties-

away.

But I give the show Youngish men who have been, In- torested up to a point begin to cool off when they find that she has á daughter of 20. Some even trans» fer their attentions from mother to myself.

All this makes life very difficult, for my mother is not one of those who are content to efface them- selves in favour of their children.; On the contrary, she becomes every day more jealous, more en- vious, more catty.

When I was 15 or 15 she made my life miserable by dressing me as if I were 12, and treating mo like an infant. Now that the ex- 'censive shortening of skirta no longer suggests childhood she is anxious to maintain the bluff but cannot get away with it. So she has her revenge by keeping me as far as possible in the background, snubbing me in public and laugh- ing at my ecensional gaucherics- due malfily to my upbringing.

I imagine that my case is not altogether exceptional. Is it any wonder that the daughters of such mothers grow up hard and selfish?

Ruby-red dull-surfaced satin is delightful for an afternoon gown, and especially charming when relieved by vest and cuffs made of narrow coffee- coloured 'lace' frills, as suggest- ed in the sketch,

A Beauty Hint.

PLUCKING THE EYEBROWS,

I am the proud possessor of a "Women realise that shapely. daughter aged 20 and considered eyebrows are great beautifiers, and pretty. At the end of a year and a half she returned: no longer a happy, light-hearted girl, but cold, super- cilious, und, superior-and, worst of all, without a trace of humour.

From her capacious trunk she produced many pretty frocks, with the comment, "Oh, yes, 1 got that in Vienna," or "I got this in Paris," but never a trifle for me, her mother.

It was my first disappointment. Later I was to get many more.
