A gas and oil fire in the Frank Getty well at Santa Fe Springs, Los Angeles burned for over two weeks and for that time defied all attempts to conquer it. Dikes 12 foot high were built around the well to prevent the fire from 'spread- ing. It is estimated that 15,000 barrels of oil went up in smoke every 24 hours. A tunnel was bared from boyond the dike to the shaft in order to cut off the flames.
