There was a large and ons thusiastic gathering of members of the Scottish Company of the Hong kong Volunteer Defence Corps and guests, at Volunteer Headquarters last night, the occasion being the annual Halloween Dinner of the Company. These functions have come to be an institution of the kilted section of the Volunteers, and are looked forward to each year. On this occasion nothing had been spared to make the evening a success, and the com- pany thoroughly enjoyed them- selves,

Scottish Co. Prowess,
Capt. Morrison said he was very pleased to welcome the guests of the evening to the fourth celebra- tion of Hallow'een by the Scottish Company. He would like first of all to give a brief resume of the activities of the Company during the past year. Their progress, he said, had been chequered, owing to depression in the sugar indus- try and the reduction of staff in the two big local refineries. As a result of this, they had lost a number of very fine fellows, Some of them had gone home, and he hoped they would find suit- able employment (hear, bear), Recruiting for the Company had not been very good, and he hoped it would improve. In gathering recruite, present members should put forward the pride of country. (Applause).
Speaking of the prowess of the Scottish section, he was pleased and proud to say that they had their eminence in retained musketry, Thanks to the genero- sity of Mr. R. M. Dyer, they had been able to shoot against the Scots Guards and the Borderers,

Recruits Wanted.
In response to repeated calls, B George Duncan made a reference to the poor recruiling for the Scot- tish Company, and said he wanted every Scot to join up (hear, hear).
The same theme was taken up by brief Mr. Gordon Mackie in a speech, when he said he hoped the younger members of the Scottish community in Hongkong would do fail they could to support the Com-
