INDIGNANT RECORDER.
CONVICTION OF RUSSIAN JEW QUASHED.
"I do not want the records of this country to contain the report of the imprisonment of a man like this. I think it is perfectly dia- graceful."
Sir Walter Greaves-Lords, the Recorder of Manchester, uttered these words at the Manchester City Sessions when Maurice Huller, of Bury New-road, ap- pealed against a sentence of one. month's hard labour, to which hu had been sentenced by two Man- chester City magistrates in July, for falling to register as an alien. "I shall quash the sentence and substitute Instead a fine of one shilling," added Sir Walter.
"I can only regret that anybody in this country should have econ fit to send this man to prison," he continued. "This is the second time in this Court I have had to deal with a sentence on a Russian Jew and I am pleased beyond measure that on both occasions the appellants were represented by a member of their own religion who saw they got_justice."
