Mr. Maconochlo has likewiso ex- perienced a sense of isolation, as being for the most of the time practically the only representativa of the Free Church Ministry, a great change for him after being the secretary of the Manchester District Free Church Federation. Alhough well able to stand alono and to defend himself and his cause, Mr. Maconachia is the soul of friendship and therefore all the more hearty was the welcome ho to me as a colleague, and

In the ordinary way it is bad form to talk about people to their faces, It is offensive to make personal remarks, however, complimentary, But at a time like this a special license is given to the speaker, while the victim has to suffer in silence,

Mr. Maconachie's ministry in Hongkong began on March 30, 1919, and closed on September 30, 1928, having lasted exactly fifteen years and a half. Thus the Ministry just closed has sur- pasaed in duration all preceding cnes since the Church became self-supporting. Not only so but, in that period, Union Church touch. ed a height of prosperity ́ far above the highest reached before, na indiented by the number of neat holders and the amount of the current income, while the pulpit attained a breadth of influence quite unique.

Hospital Work.

Mr. J. Mitchell, the chairman of the committee, remarked that he was one of the oldest members of the Church. He was glad to bị associated with the public farewell. Mr. Maconachie had preached the Gospels faithfully and well and Mrs. Maconachie had ably support. ed him in the work of the Church. The members wished them all hap piness in their well earned leisure.

Bishop's Address.

These were not the only points of contact with the larger public and the non-Church-goer. As a Pastor, as well as preacher, Mr. Maconachle went far beyond the limits of his congregation in his Hospital visitation. That the abounding prosperity of the Church was closely con- nected with the general prosperity of the Colony, none recognised more clearly than Mr. Maconachie, who likewise foresaw that the con- ditions were too favourable to last, and that a period of Anaucial do pression was liable to follow, for which provision should be made.
