JAPAN URGED TO MEET CHINA HALF WAY,

Tokyo, Aug. 22. Speaking at a meeting of the Chhine Council, the Premier inti- mated that Consul General Yadas had an interview with Marshal Chiang Kai-shek before leaving Shanghai, and indicated that the Nationalist Government's 'attitude to Japan on the question of treaty. revision was becoming tnore con- elliatory and that the Nationalists had dropped their, intention of enforcing ad interim measures pending the conclusion of a new treaty. After hearing the latest reports on the situation, the Cabinet therefore agreed to adopt, a watchful and waiting attitude for the time being in view of the Nationalists' change of attitude.

In this connexion, it is note- worthy that some of the leading vernacular papers, notably the Jiji and Nichi Nichi are recom mending the Japanese Government to show a more sympathetic at- titude to China and to meet the Nationalists half way:-Reuter.
