Shanghai, Aug. 13, - The Notes signed by Mr. C. T. Wang and Sir Sidney Barton, on the 9th inst, are very similar tex- tually to the Sino-American Notes of March 30,

The first, from the Foreign Minister, states as follows: "Animated by the desire to pro- mote the most friendly feelings happily subsisting between the Dritish and the Chinese pooples, the Nationalist Government aro prepared to bring about the imme- diate settlement of the case along lines already agreed upon as result of recent discussions.

The Note adds that though it was found that the incident was entirely instigated by the Com. munists, the Nationalist Govern- ment nevertheless will accept the responsibility for the incident.

THE SEVEN PROPOSALS.

Recognition of Law Courts and

Taxation Provided For.

The declaration of the British

Government of its polley toward China, made on December 18, 1926, as mentioned above, was as a very lengthy document and was publish- in our fasue of December 31 of

that year,

The seven proposals dated Janu- ary 20, 1927 above mentioned were as follows:

1-His Majesty's Government are prepared to recognise mo- dern Chinese Law Courts as com- potent Courts for cases brought by British plaintiffs or com- plaints, and to waive the right of the attendance of a Britiah representative at the hearing of such cases.

2-His Majesty's Government are prepared to recognise the validity of a reasonable Chineso Nationality Law.

3. Hls Majesty's Government are prepared to apply, as far as is practicable, In British Courts in China, modern Chinese civil and commercial codes-apart from procedure codes and those affecting personal status-and duly enacted subordinate legis- lation as and when such laws and regulations are promulgated and enforced in Chinese Courts and on Chinese citizens through- out China.

4-His Majesty's Government. are prepared to make. British subjects in China Hablo to pay! such regular and legal Chineso taxation, not involving discrimi- nation against British subjects or British goode, as is in fact imposed on and paid by Chinese eltizens throughout China.
