In the first year of British occupation, Hongkong was visited by two severe lyphoons and a disastrous fire?
The first typhoon occurred. on the night of July 21st, 1841, with the result that the Colony's temporary hospitals. and numbers of other strues tures wero levelled to the ground. Almost every house was unroofed, six foreign ships were sunk, four were driven ashore and over twenty others badly damaged. The loss of life amongst the Chinese boat population was very great.
The sick and suffering were removed to a foaling hospital, and the work of reconstruction was begun, but four nights later another typhoon destroy- ed most of the frail structures that were still standing.
Hongkong, we are told, learned a lesson from these disasters and began to con- struct new style godowns and houses, with spacious veran-. daha, strong walls and sub- stantial roofs.
The big fire mentioned occurred on August 12th, and it, destroyed the greater part of the town known as the Bazaar.
