Trees, too, were blown down to form obstacles for tanks, and wire. entanglements were cut by the Bangaloro torpedo. During these Joperations the oflear spectators from the Imperial Defence College were formed up 800 yards away;
Formidable Obstacle.
Cross-country trials of armour- ed fighting vehicles took place
One near Tidworth.
of the thickest hodges in the neigh- bourhood, with a trench on either side, proved a formidable obstacle for all but the motor-cycle, the hew M.A.R.T.E.L. scout, or recon- naissance car designed to take the place of the horse, and light and medium tanks. The drivers of all the vehicles were caught in the branches of young trees, and occa- sionally badly mauled by them, The need for a protective mask for the face was clearly indicated.
Both the light and the 30 cwt. six-wheeler failed to surmount this obstacle. There was practi- cally no gap at the start, so that the body of the vehicle had to Auc-force its way through a thick entanglement of branches and young trees. It would have súc ceeded but for the fact that the front wheels became embedded in the ditch.
At No. 14, Granville Road (Top Flour), Kowloon,
A motor-bicycle with sidecar found a convenient gap quite carly, and the Austin scout, which weighs only dewt., was part- ly driven and partly man-handled through a small opening.
Grouning Tank.
A Quantity of Valuable House hold Furniture. (Particulars from Catalogus.)
On View from Wednesday, the 18th July, 1928.
Terms: Cash on Delivery.
A medium tank, weighing from LAMMERT BROS.,
10 to 12 tons; forced its way Auctioneers. through the thickest part of the hedge. It groaned a lttle during the struggle, but everything fell before It, and the ground. was strewn with branches and timber several feet in depth. A semi- track vehicle tried unsuccessfully to negotiate this gap made by the tank.

A natural but boggy trench was the next obstaclo this armoured forca cross-country contest. Here, again, some of the lighter and the heavier vehicles'were in difficulties and had to be 'towed out of the trench. The Auglin Scout was pulled over the opening by means of drag ropes. The six-wheeled vehicles showed some superiority here, while the tank, cutting the tracked machines, crossed the cut- the least ting without in perspiring. This was the first trial of the kind and clearly show- ed the importance of reconnais. sunce when armoured vehicles are to make their way across strange country.
