Newport, (R.I.), July 2. Lieut. Command Thalbert. N. Alford and Lieut. William Butler, jr., naval avintors, were killed. to-day when their seaplane went into a nose dive while they were doing a series of loops, and plunged 1,000 feet into the harbour here.

Lieut. Commander Alford, strap- ped into the plane, was drowned, while Lieut. Butler died of his (injuries at the naval hospital. It was at first thought that Butler might recover.

Lieut. Commander Alford, the Manila office of the Associated Press was advised by Licut Com- mander Frunk H. Luckel at Los Banos, was Asiatic communication officer from June 18, 1919, ta March 15, 1922. He took up avia- tion about two years ago.
