The future of the motor car in China was touched upon by Mr. Walton Schmidt, Field Represen- tative of the National Automobile Chamber of Commerce, New York, who lectured on good roads at the Institution of Engineers and Ship builders last evening. The lecture was under the auspices of the Hongkong Automobile Association and was excellently attended by local motorists and others.

Mr. Schmidt said in part;

Roads for Chinn

Our goal in this educational work is to have motor travel con- ditions favourable in all countries and to have motor products made at a price available for all. Up der such conditions there will be plenty of business for every high grade company whether American or British.

The thought may be in some of your minds "Why bring educa. tional pictures concerning good roads and taxation to Hongkong, Here we have good road and rea- sonable taxation ?"

! Compare these figuras with Chinn. In the whole of China in- cluding Manchuria there are less LATE MR. J. S. MURRAY, than twenty five thousand motor vehicles. That makes China the biggest country in the world with the smallest quot of motor vehi cles.

I have heard it said that during the period of re-construction China should not be encouraged to buy motor cars that there are other things of more importance to the welfare of the people for which they should spend their money.

All signs point to the fact that China has decided to buy motor cars and that ale appreciates the advantage of motor transport over other forms of transportation.
