CHAPTER I.
It was a quiet Sunday afternoon in early spring. The lounge of the Versham House Residential Club for Women was almost empty. At one end a woman was writing at a email table: there were two others eading novels; and at the far corner by the window, a girl was leaning back in a chintz-covered chair, her hands folded across her knee, staring vaguely at a blue patch of sky.
Shé was strikingly beautiful, and the sunlight flooding the window made her hair gleam like pale gold. Her eyes were a slightly deeper shade of blue than the cerulean sky and they held an expression that was partly wonder and partly defi- ance. Unconsciously, sho pressed her prettily arched lips, as though, with determination...

It was the sort of day when everyone was tempted to wear the brighter clothes demanded by this spell of fine weather. Shelagh Hurstborne, however, avoided the least touch of colour. She wore a of black simple afternoon frock ninon, with collar and cuff of crisp white organdi.

The colour mounted warmly to her face as she glanced down at the diamond ring glittering on her en- gagement finger. It was the only piece of jewellery she had not sold: and it seemed a pitiful, frontent re- minder of things that could no long-
