DIRT TRACK RACING. 131 M.P.H. AT BROOK-
Thrills of New Motor
Cycle Sport.
Not since the chariot races of ancient Rome or the tourna menta of medieval days has the public-been provided with such a spectacle as this new dirt-track racing.
LANDS.
All Track Records Broken.
The great surprise at Brook landa during Whitsuntide was in the last race, the Gold Star ban- dicap, when Mr. Kayo Don broke all speed records for the tracks, and gave an exhibition of driving which has never been equalled since the death of Mr. Parry
Whether it lasts or not, it is cer tainly taking the country by storm. We are in sight of a boom that may utterly eclipse greyhound racing
as it has done in Australia and Thomas. will seriously affect attendances at even the most varied and interest ing events in normal motor racing
Dirt-track racing comes from America and Australia, where it has become a national sport.
It originated from events held on grass racecourses in places where no motor tracks existed...
Being much smaller than a motor track and. devold of banking, the grass: course discounted sheer speed, and put a premium on the human element.
Bende and corners could only be negotiated at any speed by a form of deliberate skidding. Riders gradually learnt the trick and deve- loped it to a fine art, dignided, in fact, by the term "brondsiding."
Up till yesterday the record for winning a race was held by the late Mr. Parry Thomas, at a speed of 120 m.p.h., and the fastest lap for the track at 129.36-m.ph, but Mr Kaya Don lapped at 181.76 m.p.h., and his speed for the whole race of 25 miles, which he won, was 128,86 m.p.h. 7:
This speed wea phenomenal con sidering that he had a big fold through which to drive his Bun- beam, and, lap after lap, he literally "wamped" the other drivers, until they appeared to be standing still. Towards the onl M. Kaye Den shed the tread of one of his tyres, but he came in an easy winner.
Another incident in this race Jockeying for Position Then the grass got worn off, the was a collision between an ́0.M., surface broke up, and cinders were driven by Mr. Oats, and Mr. Turn- laid down, partly to facilitate skid- bull's Bugatti. on his near side, came in collision with him. The skidded at about 10 m.p.h. but came to rent without overturning. Mr. Oats was badly cut about the face.
A typical track is about the size and shape of a football ground with the ends rounded off, and the track laid round the touch-line space; so that there are two straights, in which riders get up speed and two wide corners which they negotiate by akidding as near to the inside se high a

The methods of a typical "Aus tralian crack are to postpone slow ing down for the corner to the last possible moment, thereby atealing a yard or two from a more cautious competitor; "to cut out" (switch off the ignition) for a couple of seconds as he starts his broadside round the bend, then when in full control of the situation, leaning over about 45 degrees and some half-way round the bend--to open out full and take his chance!
The rider is still, mark you, in the middle of a terrific skid, hitting slight bumps and pothles that call for lightning jerks and swerves to correct.

Sometimes a machine kicks up and sideways exactly like ing broncho, comes down in a new direction, the back wheel spinning round at ton times its normal Npeed.
Captain Malcolm Campbell, having scratched, did not compete in the last race..
Mr. Kaye Don has been drivfal for many years at Brooklands, and first came into prominence as a motor cyclist, gaining many re- corda. Later he drove the Wolseley Viper, and lately he has been breaking many rocords for various idistances on the car on which he was so successful recently This car, which he has christened Tiger, is the same one, modified, on which Major Begrave secured the world's speed record at Southport some years ago at over 160 miles an hour, and on which he also broke all road records in France.
