Protests Ignored. Bannerji's enthusiasm for his détective work was good enough for a year, but five years was too much. He protested, but his de- clarations that he was n' police spy were not accepted, and he spent some months in gaol before some friends engineered a re-trial. The facts came out, and the Gov- ernment suddenly ordered his im-
mediate release.
It transpired that the United Provinces police had neglected to inform the Punjab police of the despatch of their man to Lahore, and Bannerji's noble silence at the time of the trial effectively created an impression that his later protests could not remove.
