FOUR DAYS IN CREVICE
RESCUER'S 90 FEET ROPE DESCENT.
After being trapped for four days without food in a lonely mountain crevice between Abertil- tory and Pontypool, William Jones, postaian, of Llanbilleth, died just after he had been rescued. A boy wandering on the moun- tain heard moans and cries,
Going to a deep fissure, he was directed by Jones to bring help.
"But don't tell the police," added the Imprisoned man, man
Hundreds of people followed the police up the mountain, and there were exciting attempts at rescue,
Henry Winnett, an unemployed collier, was lowered 90ft. by ropes.
He had a perilous descent, having to squeeze himself through sper- tures barely a foot wide."
A lifebelt was placed round Jones, and he was brought to the surface, but almost immediately became unconscious, and died, do spite attempts at artificial respira- tion.
Jones, who had been missing, had " been bound over a week before by Pontypool magistrates for attempt ing to commit suicido by taking poleon. He leaves a widow and eight children.
