A NEW EMPRESS.

ANOTHER VESSEL FOR

PACIFIC SERVICE.

The new vessel, announced at the shareholders' meeting of the Canadian Pacific Railway to be built for the Pacific route, will be of the same type as tho Empress of Canada, which is the commodore ship of the company's

Pacific fleet.

The object is to restore the fort nightly service which was possible when the Empress of Australia was engaged on this service.

The Empress of Canada first reach- ed Victoria from the Orient on June 23, 1922, and was most favourably received as an earnest of Improved facilities to the Far East, and develop ing the most luxurious accommodation in passenger travel on this coast Since that time, except from to May, 1924, when she was emploard in a world cruiss by the company, and brought a notable party here at its termination, she har boon continuously engaged in the transpacific service. The ribbon of the North Faciße for spoed is held by this ship...

It is reported that the size of the now vessel will be modelled on the which is 653 feet in length by seventy dimensions of the Empress of Canada, even feet nine inchos, in breadth, and fifty-three feet six inches depth. She is a cruiser stern vossel with three funnels and two polo masts. Her passenger necommodation la 1,800, and har deadweight cargo carrying with special capacity 9,500 tans, provision for silk shipments."

Since the Empress of Australia was withdrawn from the Oriental run, officials of the company on the Pacifte have urged the necessity of an additional steamer to replace the Australia, the pre-war practice being to have four ships in this route.

The company, after the arrival of the Emprenses of Russia and Asia In 1913, operated the service with thèse vessels and the old Empress of Japnu and the Monteagle, but owing to disorganized conditions. Incidental in the war, had only three vessels subsequent to the removal of the Australia to the Atlantic, and with

these three vessela reduced service has been operated. Recently, how ever, the company announced a now schedule of passenger ships serving the Far East, to provide for more sailings across the Pacific by cutting down the duration of stay in port at Manila and Vancouver,
