NEW GERMAN GIANT NEARLY
READY.!
2,500-MILE RADIUS.
Berlin, April 18. While the world is hailing the Bremen flight as a pioneer adven- ture, work is proceeding here rapid- ly but unobtrusively, on a power- ful" long-distance" flyingboat which promises to be a big advance to- wards the transformation of Trans- oceanic flying from a precarious exploit to a regular commercial en- terprise.
Since last December the Rohrbach Works have been building for the Lufthansa the flying boat Romar, which is designed for a 2,500-milé radius of action. Working day and night they expect to complete the machine not later than the end two exactly of next month, and similar models, also for the Luft- hansa, are already well advanced.
The all-metal boat, standing on the stocks in the unpretentious. sheds of the Rohrbach Works, makes a sturdy and, formidable im pression. It strikes one at once by the appearance of the extreme nar- rowness-only two passengers can ait side by side-and tallness in proportion to the 81feat span from the prow to the tip of the long tapering stern..
And it strikes one next by the appearance of eminent seaworthi- ncas against a forced descent on turbid waters. 1is windows are small portholes, and it is divided with into cight compartments watertight doors. Any two of these compartments can fill with water without in any way impairing the buoyancy of the boat, which is therefore almost unsinkable, except by collision or heavy battering.
A further iden of the Romar's size may be gained from the dimen

Provision is made for eight de- tachable petrol tanks to be carried The number con by each wing. thus be easily varied for flights of 750, 1,700,, and 2,500 miles respec- tively. The machine will weigh 9.3 tons empty and 19 tons with a full load. The maximum speed with a full load will be about 125 miles per hour.
The machine will possess a carry- ing capacity of 12 passengers with sleeping accommodation, together with a crew of four and n man of all work, one of whose prin- cipal functions will be cooking. For, in addition to food supply by automatic machines, there will be a small kitchen furnished with elec-1 trie cooking apparatus.,
Such is the latest German effort to combine commercial utility with safety in trans-ocenic flying. The Lufthansa who-having ordered. three Romars-are evidently em- barking with some confidence on far-reaching designs, resolutely re- fuse to disclose what these designs are.
On the face of it the Romar should be able to leap from the Cape Verde Islands to Brazil with safety and replace the ships at pre- sent covering that section of the Spanish-South American air ser- vice.
