Only by a narrow margin did the submarine 8-4 oscape sinking a second time after it was raised off Provincetown, Mass., the other day. The conning tower, with the colours at balf mast, is visible between the cylindrical floats.

As the superstructure of the raised submarino 8-4 slowly emerged from reced- ing waters in a Charlestown Navy Yard drydock, the Navy paused to pay a tender tribute to the half dozen heroes whose bodies lay still ontombed within. Above, you see Commander H. E. Baun- ders placing a basket of blos.. soms over the compartiment in which they died. Below, a general view of the S-4 after withdrawal of the water laid her baze.
