Damocles' sword was threatened danger--the destroying dangers of impure oils are only too certain. Any oil used for 1,000 miles becomes diluted with benzine and water; contaminated with dust, carbon and steel. Thinned-out oil is weak and watery-does not protect. against friction. This consideration must be borne in mind in weighing the fact, which Is reassuring so far as it goes, that in the United States the possible dangers of the use of ethyl were the subject of an investigation by a committee of the Public Health Service, and that the sale of ethyl, which prohibited pending that in- vestigation, has subsequently been allowed. Sir William Pope states; In his letter to the Times that the report of this Committee is necessarily preliminary in character and is framed in guarded terms; it may be,summarized by one of its phrases: No positive evidence could be obtained of harm- ful effecta attributable to the use of ethyl gasolene, and it coneluides by urging strongly that suitablo the ofl! appropriation be requested from Congress for the continuance of these investigations.""

WHAT CONGESTION COSTS.
Philadelphia, Mar. 14,-"Super highways," suggested by Col.. Samuel P. Wetherill, Jr., president of the Regional Planning Federa- tion, would save motorists some $400,000 a day.
At present, traffle, congestion in castern Pennsylvania, southern New Jersey and northern Delaware is costing motorists just that amount, he says.
According to Wetherill, these "super-highways" would relieve this congestion.
"Ways and means of getting past Philadelphia, Wilmington, Chester, Camdon, Trenton and other, principal cities of the re gion, without going through their congested centres, and of getting from one part of the suburban territory to another. without going! into these cities and out again, form one of the most urgent mat- ters for the consideration of not only the commercial interests, but of, every resident of the district," be explains.
