MR. E. R. THOMPSON OF THE “EVENING STANDARD.”

London, Apr. 10. Mr. Edward Itaymond Thompson, chief editor of the Evening Stan dard died suddenly to-day. Under the pen name of E. T. Raymond he wrote many penetrating political portraits. His first book was, "Un- censored Celebrities" in which and in succeeding volumes he presented a great group picture of political figures of tho Inst thirty years. The best of his books is considered to be his biography of Disraeli.—British Wireless.

[Mr. Thompson, who was the youngest son of Mr. Ephraim Thompson, solicitor, was born in 1872 and received his education pri- vately. His early journalist train- ing was received at Brighton, Leeds and elsewhere and in 1897 he join- ed the staff of the Star, and from 1898 to 1900 was associated with the late Captain Brinkley R. A. of Tokyo us Hterary assistant.

[Mr. Thompson was editor of the Japan Gazette for the following two years and later became night editor of the Daily Mirror. Later he joined the staff of the Evening Standard being in turn night editor, news editor and leader writer. Ho edited the Outlook from 1919. to 1920 and was chief lender writer of the Evening Standard from 1910 to the time of his death..

His first book. "Uneonsored Cele- brities, All and Sundry" was pub- lished in 1919, and he followed this with "Mr. Balfour," "Portraits of the Nineties," "Mr. Lloyd George," "The Man of Promise" and Dis- rael" Mr. Thompson also made namorous contributions, chiefly on political subjects, to British and American publications.]
