WOMAN'S WORLD

FOR OUR LADY READERS,

Sound Advice.

NEVER FLATTER WOMEN.

It was a philanderer who gave | this advice="Never fatter woman and it is true that few womenl like lattery.

Woman is insulted when men try to move her by means of blandishnients and honeyed words. She knows, by experience and In- tuition, that men use flattery as a means to gain an end-usually a rather despicable end. She is, therefore, always on guard against the flatterer. If she takes herself at all seriously, the insincerity, the paltriness of Battery is ab horrent to her.

Praise it is that she desires andi expects from the opposite sex. The sincere approbation and heart-felt approval of her men and folk are what she works schemes for. For that she spends hours in draughty dress anlona:. electric endures mud packs and treatments in beauty, parlours; strives and struggles in badly ventilated bargain basements. The earning of praise is uppermost in her thoughts. £

.ever

And so, having so much time and thought upon her person, is it likely that she will be content with flattery in return? Flattery is to praise as dross is to pure, gold, and no one will accept dross when they have been expecting gold.

It was'nt a dance last year, and Jill, charming but scarcely beauti ful, stood before her two suitors. Tom, in a calm, dispassionate tone, sak, "You are as beautiful! as the Queen of Sheba," while Jim just said "Gee" in a tone of heart-felt approval. So Jill dane- ed with din, for she knew she was not beautiful. A dance that made all the difference.

Many a woman accepts flattery for the sense of power it gives them. Power over the stronger vessel-man-is to her one of the dearest things on earth.

THE PERFECT FOMENTATION,

First have everything rehdy,, including the patient. Then lay a with face towel in a warm mixing basin has with the ends hanging out. In the middle put the flannel and fold the towel over it and pour in plenty of boiling water. Now comes that part where fingers generally get burnt and time is wasted, while the fomentation gets cold. But none of these misfortunes will happen if this method is followed out. Take hold of the dry ends of the towel and twist in opposite directions, bringing the hands together. When the water is all squeezed out, open the towel and as quick as light- ning shake the flannel, fold it and place it where needed, then cover with oiled silk and another flannel to keep in the heat.

Horizontal rows of metal thrend decorate the bodice, and panel of this model in cinno- mun georgitte. A rhinestone buckle holds the draperies on the hip, while the little vest is in chiffon to match the threads.

Like. May a girl, typical of her sex and generation-and not ashamed of either-say something' of the dancing men she dislikes?

Let me give first place to the young man whom I shall call, for want of a better word, the Blood.. You know the sort-smooth of hair and empty of head, sometimes good- looking, often accomplished enough hide on a dance floor, trying to mental uncouthness behind an Ox- ford necent, all catchwords and in- solence.

In ten years time. .... ah, then The may have developed into a like- able young Guardsman or had the immaturities rubbed off in the City, Or, again, he may still be a heavy bore. But meantime I shall con- tinue to dance as often as possible with men of the world and leave the Blood to the flappers. Most of them are not critical.

At the opposite pole is the Aged Gallant, often army (ret.)-red of face, a little watery of eye, always fumbling for his monocle with one hand while he squeezes your arm with the other faisomely flattering, maddeningly given to calling you "dear young lady" at first, and (after the first dunce) "my dear."

Sometimes he dances quite well. More often, his face gleaming redly, he revolves you giddily to the accompaniment of: "These new- fangled dances are rather rot-

Then there are the Esthete and the Hearty. The Esthete regards the Blues us rather rough; he goes to night clubs, but only to sit around the table and talk complexes and souls. The Hearty insists on having every dance and horrifies the band, which takes pride in its exquisite rhythm, by demanding "another jolly old polka to liven up the show a bit."
