DANGERS OF NEWLY DYED SHOES.

denly became ill following the wearing of shoes that had been recently dynd.
In 1919 an army surgeon report- ed seventeen cases, and more:re- cently the records of forty-eight cases
were found in medical terature. In the twenty-five American cases, nitrobenzene was
the ingredient of the shoe dye that caused the poisoning, and in most of the cases occurring in Europe, aniline dyes were responsible.
When a person puts on a pair of shoes that have been recently dyed with a substance containing n considerable amount of nitro- benzene or unfline, he is likely to weakness, dizziness, develop sleepiness, headache, nausea and vomiting, and begin to turn blue. When the blood is examined, it la found to be dark brown in colour, and indeed sometimes almost binck.
Several cases recently have been reported in which children have been severely affected as a result of wearing shoes newly dyod.
An Investigation just completed Indicates that the nitrobenzine nets directly upon the blood in such a manner that the latter is no longer able to take up oxygen; the hemoglobin of the blood, the substance that is responsible for taking up oxygen, is modified inte another substance which has not that power.
A significant observation is that nitrobenzene will produce this effect in dogs, cats, rats and human beings, but will not have the same effect on guinea-pigs or rabbits.
In several cities there are laws which prevent bootblacks or shoc stores from returning recently dyed shoes to the person who is to wear them. The shoes must be kept for twenty-four hours in the opin air before they are returned to the person who left them to be dyed.
SOME DOMESTIC MISHAPS.
There are many little mishaps which cause much worry to a house- wife but which can very easily be put right if she knows what to do.1
Scratched Silver.
No matter how badly silver and plated articles may be scratched, it is possible to remove the marks with a paste. formed of olive oil and putty powder. The pasto should be rubbed gently over the marks, and they will then speedily disap- pear.
Scratches on Marble.
Scratches on marble can be ro- moved by rubbing with a little vinegar, taking, care to wash with plain water as soon as the mark has vanished. This treatment will affect the polish to a certain extent, but good furniture cream rubbed in will restore the surface.
Glasses and Mirrors.
well
All kinds of scratches on glass and mirrora should be treated with jewellers' rouge. This should be rubbed on rather vigorously, great care being taken to follow the way of the scratch. Some patience is required in the case of a deep scratch, but soon or later the mark disappears.
Burnt Plates.
Burnt marks on plates can be treated successfully with a cork and
little damp salt. Rust spots on metal may be removed if they are rubbed with a cork that has been dipped in paraffin. A curk mois- tened with paratin is also splendid for removing marks from hearth tiles

Elegance."
AN ELUSIVE QUALITY.
"L'elegance, says a French con- temporary, "is not achieved merely by having a beautiful dress." There is no word to translate that French word, elegance. It means so much more than being well dressed, fashionably dressed, or being chic. It is not uxpressed in style cither, or looking well-bred. Neither is it quite the same thing as having charm, though charm is mixed with it. A WOMAN zp- preciates it more than a man be- cause it is purely artificial.
It must have been born in the Eighteenth Century, and at Versail. les. Some women have it to-day, and they are beloved of the dress- makers. For thom they will do- sign dresses specially, and fashion writers will describe what they wear. They make fashions the rage. It is they who finally say which of the new styles that are shown in October shall be worn in the winter and coming spring. Who are they? Ah! That is hard to say. They have no name but "They."

DINNER IS READY,
BOYS!
Here are some girls I hate dancing with: the girl who is lazy and just slumps on one; the girl who talks as if she were a blase expert, but whose dancing is like a man's first game of golf; a girl who clings on with closed eyes, which makes one feel a fool; the girl whose feet one trends on be-l canse she will look about to see who is watching her; the girl who wants to chatter and expects bright, continuous response; the girl who has just learnt a new step. and wants to teach it to one in the middle of a erush..'
а
A girl worth dancing with takes care of her figure and muscles and dresses herself as appropriately for dancing as she would for some favourite sport, and she is keen.
My ideal partner would be just short of my shoulder, slim, fit, lithe, quick, deftfooted; calm, but] amused and amusing; given to ex- pressing much in monosyllables; perfectly groomed; interested, but mainly in me, and able to conduct an intelligent conversation laconi- eally and without emerging, as it were, from the pool of music in which bath of us are immersed.
Goods look? A girl like that could not be bad looking.
