It was definitely déclared that the Ministry's policy is to buy British cars. It is understood that Morris cars have in, fact been ordered in large quantities and that the Fords are gradually to be superseded.

Some authorities believe that, at the time the Air Ministry ordered Fords, it would have been impos- sible to obtain Brilish cars capable of giving similar service at any thing approaching the same price. This view is, however, contested by

some motor experts.

TO BLOWS.

A quarrel between a Chinese chauffeur and an Indian, near the motor bar stand nt Hill Road, re sulted in the appearance of both men before Mr. R. E. Lindsell this morning. The trouble arose out a motor collision, and, the question of damages not being satisfactorily settled, the men resorted to blows. The Indian, appeared in Court this morning with his head tied up in a bloodstained handkerchief and with his face smeared with dried blood.

After hearing the evidence, the Magistrate bound both men over in a personal bond of $26, and, in nudition, fined, the Indian $6, his Worship expressing the opinion that he was the cause of trouble.

The eight new destroyers all bear old and honoured names, Acasta is the third of her name and dates from 1797. Achates, dates back to the Armada, and the new ship will be the fifth of her line. Acheron and Active will cach be the seventh, and Ardent the ninth ship of that name. The first Ardent was a French prize captured, appropriately, enough, by the Exeter in 1763, and the name bears many battle honours.

All these five ships will keep alive names which served in the North Sea during the Great War. Perhaps the most interesting re- vival is that of the 600-year-old name of Antony. A ship of this name is mentioned in action with the French in 1417 and another fought at the Armada.

BIG AIR ENGINE DISCOVERY.

SEMI-DIESEL MOTOR TO BURN CRUDE OIL.

It has now become possible to draweaside the veil from a romance of aerial engineering.

For years British experts have been attempting to produce a light aero engine working on the semi- Diesel principle, and burning a cheap crude oil.

One of the biggest items in an aviation company's bill is the cost of the petrol.

To-day it is possible to give general details of a motor running on crude oil at about 4%. a gallon, as compared with aviation petrol at is. dd. a gallon.

650-Horse-Power, This engine has been developed for the Air Ministry by Messrs. William Beardmore and Co.

Known as the "Tornado," and de- veloping 650 h.-p., it is to have its first mid-air trials in the new glant airship R 101, after which it will be tested in an aeroplane.

STRAITS STEAMER'S EXPERIENCE.

OUT OF CONTROL FOR

FIVE HOURS.:

MEETS A TYPHOON.

Siam, Feb. 28. Owing to bad weather, the 5.8.

Kepong had a terrible experience on her voyage from Singapore to this port, which she reached 48 hours late.

solutely helpless through damage to For a time the Kepong was ab- her steering gear, and but for the fortuitous eircumstance that for a period the storm abated somewhat, there is every reason to believe she would have been lost.

In latitude 7.25 N., longitude 108

E. at 4 a.m., she encountered what can only be characterised as a ty phoon, at most unusual then that in the Gulf, and it was then that her steering gear was damaged.

Steering Gear Carried Away. According to Captain Burton, she left Singapore on Feb. 20 and bad weather was encountered as soon as she passed the Horsburgh Light- house..

Wind and seas increased with con- tinuous rains up til Feb. 24, when the storm rose to its height, the wind backing from N.N.E. to W. und S. W.

During this time the vessel'a starboard boat was badly smashed, the steering gear was carried away and No. 1. derricks broke adrift and were smashed. Even the malthoid roofing of the bridge and aft-houses was blown off by the force of the

wind.

Out of Control.

The ship lay five hours out of control while the steering gear was being repaired, after which the steamer was able to proceed on her, voyage arriving here with a tired and weary crew.

Fortunately there was no loss of

life.

Repairs are being carried out on the steamer while she is lying in port here, and it is expected she will be ready to sail in a day or two.

Experience of the Kistna.

The m.s. Kistna, which arrived in Bangkok on Feb. 27 having left Singapore on Feb. 23, and the good luck to miss the course of the ty phoon and came up to scheduled time.. Captain Wilson said that the vessel rolled very badly after leaving Singapore and an average of about 0% knots was done.

The chief engineer of the Kistna, Mr. Gresswall, stated that, due to the Intense rolling of the vessel, trouble was encountered with the circulating pumps, which drew air The wire reels and got jammed,

Air is first compressed in the cylinder, then, a jet of heavy oll is injected. This vaporises and ignites, and the explosions drive the engine.
