"MAN A MACHINE.”

LIMITS OF BIOLOGICAL SCIENCE,

How far may biology ponch on. life preserves? How far can such forbidden ground exist, and to what extent can science take into account any phenomena that can- not be explained in terms of phy- sics and chemistry?

These are dome of the problems raland by Mr. Joseph Needham in "Mana Machine (Payche Minia- ture 12, Kegan Paul, 29. 6d.).

Mr. Needham is on unassailable, though too little famillar, ground when he charges the vitalists with imitating Huxley's "Trespassers' will be prosecuted-Moses," and with having arranged boundaries between living and dead matter, boundaries not to be crossed by science and with setting up the boards further back every time that the experimentalists crossed over.
