PICTURESQUE REBEL CHIEF,
Managua, Jan. 5.
The "rebel" chief Sandino was one of the leaders of the Liberal army until the latter laid down their arms in accordance with the agreement reached by President Coolidge's Envoy, Mr. "Stimson. General Sandino, however, refused, to surrender and gathered to his standard all those disatisfied with the settlement and founded a little Republic in the Nueva Segovia dis- trict on the border of Honduras. He seized American mines, levied taxes, coined money in the name of the republic and established a most. rigid prohibition regime, under which a man caught selling intoxi- Cants was shot. Even the members of his own party call him a bandit and assassin, while Sandino styles himself as "The wild beast of the mountain." --Router's American Service.
