HOW INDUSTRY HAS DEVELOPED.

P

When the "Barbarians" lying in what is known to-day as the Straits Settlements brought "birds' nests" as tribute to the Court in Peking in the Tang Dynasty period of 1,100 years ago little did they realise that this delleney would become in the distant futuro a commercial commodity bringing wealth to their posterity., says the Chinese Economic Bulletin. The value of "birds' nests" imported into China in 1926 was Bk. Tls, 967,365 while the figures for each of the three previous years exceeded one million Halkwan taels.

Swallow's Nest.

The name of bird's nest seem to be misnomer. The Chinese name is literally "swallow's nest." According to the dealers in Shang- hai, the nest is built by a swallow as large as a crow. It inhabits the cliffs in the Straits Settle- ments and lives on whitebait. The nest is made of the bird's salivary secretions. Natives col- lect the nests with knives attached to long bamboo poles, as they can- not be reached otherwise.

OWN

The birds nest is an important item on the Chinese menu. Every good restaurant in a large city is able to serve this delicacy at shart notice, China's import of this article over a period of 10 years Shows a steady increase, with a large percentage consumed Shanghai, as may be seen in the following table:
