HOW DEAF LEARN TO SPEAK.

EFFECTS OF "VOICE VISION" DESCRIBED.

SOUND WAVES TRANS- FORMED.

A now method of teaching the

deaf to speak which promises to simplify that. extremely difficult task is being put to a practical teat in a series of experiments now being conducted at the Western Pennsylvania School for the Dent, in Edgewood, Pennsylvania, U.S.A.

The new method, known as "voice vision," is Based on the Osiso, a recent invention which presents the voice in visible form by transforming sound БУЛУСЯ into light waves. By means of this device, the teachers expect to aid the 300 deaf children in the school to gain greater control of their vocal organs and eventually to achieve better and more plens- ing volees.

According to the Edgewood teachers, the chief difficulty in teaching speech to persons de- prived of hearing from infaney ia to provide them with an adequate Iden of what they are trying to do Ordinarily, this is done by first making the child conscious of sound vibrations in musical in- struments, auch as the plane, guitar. or drum. Then the atten- tion of the pupil is called to the vibrations of the voice as felt in the chest, back, cheeks, top of hend, etc., of the teachers. The next step is for the child to place. his hands on himself and experi ment with his voice until he has produced vibrations such as he felt in the teacher, and if he imitates the teacher exactly, he produces sounds which are in- telligible.

In the "voice vision" classes the same result is achieved in an- other way. The teacher speaks a sustained note, such as "ah" or "oh," into a telephone receiver attached to the Osiso, and has the child. watch the path of light waves which follow. Then the child is bidden to make the same. sound. By experimenting with his voice, the child soon repro- duces approximately the picture as the teacher, which means approximately the sound.

An Advantage,

same

same

The "Voice vision" method has the advantage, the teachers say, of making the child forget him- self. While feeling for vibra- tious in, the teacher or himself the child becomes" self-conscious, and a contraction of the throat

museles is the result. With the Osiso, however, the children have been quick to realize that the essence of their specch is re-. vealed in the mirrors, of the in- strument, and they centre their attention on the light waves.

In the few wecks that the Osiso has been on trial, man gratifying improvements in tone and volume of volee have been made. In some cases, pupils have beri taught to bring out their voices for the first time.

A. Clarence Manning, Superin- tendent of the institution, is en- thusiastic over the possibilities of the Osiso as a means of improve ing speech of the deaf. To him, any device which will give the children a clear picture of speech to shorter study time is a decided boon; and in the Oniso he great opportunity of improving the children's speech."

"Our pupils are much interested in the instrument," declares Mr. Manning, "as they recognize in It an accurate portrayal of their individual defects of speech. It gives them visible conception of their speech as it is, and with the teacher's assistance of what it should be.

"It is too early for us to determine the exact amount of render assistance the Osiao ean

in the development of speech, but our teachers are most favourably impressed with results thus far obtained."

The Osiso is the invention of Joseph W. Legg, of Wilkinsburg, an engineer of the Westinghouse Electric and Manufacturing Com- pany. It is not a complicated device in principle. When sound waves strike the diaphragm of the receiver, tiny currents of ex- actly the same frequency are set up in an electric circuit.. This current causes a small mirror to vibrate, with the result that a narrow beam of reflected, light traces a patch similar to the wave form, of the sounds. By means of a rotating polygon of mirrors, the light wave appears in the form of an unbroken wave.

A German migration agent who has arrived in Melbourne states that thousands of young Germans desire to go to Australia, which they preferred to other, countries. Lack of capital was delaying the majority, but probably a great, in- flux would be seen within the next five years, mostly farmers. The steamer Koln has just landed 200 German migrants, a possessing small capital.
