FAR EAST TRADE.
RENEWED CONSIDERATION
AT HOME,
I understand. says a writer In the Septaraq, that financial and economie authorities in London have given renewed consideration to the possibilities of developing British trade with the Far East, by, which they usually mean a more effective appeal to markets in" China, Japan. and India.
The Yorkshire County Cricket Club sub-committee, meeting at Leeds on November 3rd, confirmed the decision to appoint Herbert Sutcliffe, the great, batsman, as captain for next season. Sutele will continue to play as a profes-of sional..
While generally hailed as a move forward there is still con- troversy over the appointment of Sutcliffe as captain of Yorkshire, It is said that Rhodes was not In the case of the Japanese" keen to undertake the respon-market, attention is directed to the fact that that country is relatively sibility.

INTERNATIONAL RACE ON
SUNDAY.
The annual sailing match between he members of the St. Andrew's and St George's Societies takes place at ho Royal Hongkong Yacht Club on Sunday. Teams of six a-side have been selected, and the match will be ailed in boats of the Heyward Hays, Gael and One Design Classes.
The morning ruce is at 10 o'clock, preparatory gun at 10.55. The teams hange boats for the afternoon race, which will start about 2,30.
It is interesting, to note that the
A professional captain for York- ahire is by no means new. In in the late fact, Yorkshire 'seventies and the early 'eighties were led at different times by three professionals Ephraim Lock wood, Tom Emmett, and Louis Hall.
About the same period Notts also had a professional captain, Richard Daft, M. Sherwin, and Alfred Shaw all acting in that capacity, and James Lillywhite led the Sussex eleven for some time, but in recent years, it has always been the custom for an amateur to captain a county team. Jack Sharp certainly led Lancashire after playing for many years as a professional, but he had actually retired from professional cricket, and came back into the team as an amateur.

FAST HOCKEY MATCH YESTERDAY.
The appointment of Sutclife is interesting in view of the attitude Lord Hawke has adopted with regard to professionals captaining cricket teams.
Lord Hawke once dublared, when it was suggested that Hobbs should captain the English XI "Pray God ne professional may ever captain England," while he described the first report that Sutcliffe would captain Yorkshire ng tommy-rot."
Lord Hawke, interviewed yes, terday, said: "Possibly my old friend Juck Hobbs will laugh at this and say that I have gone back on my opinion as to professional captains. When I said that, I was talking of captains of All England and not of Yorkshire, which is a differon: nlter."
"
Asked as to his personal opinion of the selection of a professional as maptain, Lord Hawko said that he was loyal to his committee and dare not pass an opinion.

Rhodes's 'l'osition,
It has been revealed that the appointment of Herbert Sutcliffe as captain of the Yorkshire cricket leam next season was the subject of keen discussion at the meeting of the county committee.
Lord Hawke, who has since stated that he will be loyal to the committer's decision, was not in favour of the proposal, and was also opposed to Sutcliffe, being made an amateur.
The voting on this question was 19 against, G for. The appoint- ment of Sutcliffe as professional captain was carried by 13 votes to
