NINE MILLION DESTITUTES.

Peking, Nov. 17.

At least half of the people in Shantung and a part of Chihli are facing a serious famine, it was officially reparted to-day' to the Chinese International Famine Re- lief Commission. There are 9,000,- 000 destitute persons in the two provinces. The famine was caus- ed by a drought and locusts.

Mystery surrounds the murder of Naik 480, of the Shanghai Sikh police, who was found dead on East Yuhang Rond a few minutes before, midnight on Wed- nesday last week. Det:-Sgt. Omand ascertained that deceased had ex- amined and signed a watchman's book about three minutes before the watchman heard two shots and a police whistle. The deceased officer's whistle was hanging loose when he was found. He had been shot in the abdomen, and the ex- amining doctor said that he could have blown the whisle before he died. Other than an empty .32 cartridge case, the police are at a loss in finding clues to the mur- derers. At an inquest before Mr. I. T. Morris, H. M., Coroner, evidence of identification only was given..
