THE INTERPORT.
EXCITING PLAY YESTERDAY.
FINCHER DOES WELL.
For the most part struggling. against likelihood of overwhelm- ing defeat, with their backs to the wall, Hongkong gave such n sterling exhibition of cricket in the Interport against Shanghai yesterday afternoon, that, at the close of play, the position was re- trieved; and a more than sporting chance of victory was carried over to this morning.
Fine Bowling,
The recovery was in a large measure due to the fine bowling of Brace and Hankey, who, with the assistance of a pitch which played tricks practically all day, were mainly instrumental in the dismissal of the visitors for less than a hundred
runs. Brace bowled thirteen overs in the course of which he dismissed Stokes, who scored nearly half the Shanghai totul. Quayle, Capt. Barrett, 11. W. Allison and C. E. Ollerdessen. Hankey played a prominent part also. The catch he snapped up by diving at, full length to dismiss Capt Barrett was the most specta-. cular and brilliant of the match, and when he was put on to bowl he held a hot one from Rawsthorne of his own bowling which well warnunted the round of applause which followed. He claimed three! victims in all at a cost of four) runs apiece.
A word should also be said for C. D. Wales. Although only one wicket fell to him, his effort was a most valuable contribution to wards Hongkong's second innings opportunity. In seventeen overs, only 31 runs were hit off him, not one of the opposing batamen played him with any confidence, he was keeping them well up, and making full use of the "devil" in the pitch.
Stonewall Defence.
Needing 202 to win when enter- ing upon their second innings, Hongkong, had an apparently her- culean task before them. The pitch was becoming worse, if anything, and the prospect of fading light did not promise any too wall for Hongkong's over-night effort. Ninety minutes remained for play when A. W. Hayward and E. C. Fincher opened against. Isaacs and Rawsthorne, and it: was early evident that the Hong-

Hayward, too, put up a capital defensive display, but when he could not restrain his desire to hit, chose the wrong ball and
paid the penalty with his score at seventeen. Brace batted out the remaining time with perfect 'easc and confidence, taking every ball the middle of his bat, He scored only five runs, but gave a polished exhibition.
