Berlin literary circles, in which Mr. Scheffauer was a prominent gure, are shocked not merely by the tragedy itself, but also by the terrible circumstances in which it was enacted.

Mr. Scheffauer for some time had been living apart from his wife. the English lyric poetess whose verses sighed "Ethel Talbot have long been familiar to the British literary public.

Recently he had been concen- trating on the writing of a novel, which he intended to make the most important production of his literary career, and Fraulein von Mayer, who was 28 years of age, had been taking down the novel from the author's dictation.

JAPANESE PEARL CULTURE.

THE SCIENCE OF THE INDUSTRY.

CAREFUL METHODS.

Japan, is widely known in the world for the production of pearls both natural and culture. Every- the body knows that a pearl fa product of an oyster and Its formation is caused by an irritant entering the delicate tissues of the molluse and forcing the oyster to seerete layers of naere around it: The culture pearl differs from the natural pearl only in the process at the beginning. In the case of the natural pearl, an Irritant which forms the nucleus. in the wild pearl enters the oyster accidentally, whilst that of the culture' pearl is placed there intentionally. The forming of the pearl is entirely done by the oyster in bath cases.

The culture pearl is often mis- understood by the public by the name "culture" since it suggests, to the uninformed public, the idea of the imitation pear! which has flooded the American market in the last several years.
