At that time the Captain could, not say who had possession to the key of the store room, so he ordered the ship'e purser to take charge of the tbres and issue them as required. This step was taken so that the stores issued could be checked, and that no claim could be later made on the ship.

An Offensive Letter.

The perser, however, left without .permission or leave for Canton the same fight and presumably took the key of the store room with him. Witness then ordered the assistant purser to have duplicate keys made go that the stores could be handed back to Pan..

On Sunday October 30, when the once again in Hongkong, ship was the Captain found a letter addressed to him from the Hongkong, Canton, Macao, Swatow and Kongmoon. Sea- men's Union, left in his cabin. It was couched in the most offensive terma, and requested the immedinte re-in statement of the steward. Witness. wrote a short reply explaining that the steward was not dismissed from the ship at all and ended the letter by reminding the Union that there was British law in Hongkong...

Conference on Board.

The next visit of the ship to Hong- Kong was on November 1. Pan went on board and the Captain offered hin 80 the job of steward once again and 40 added that the best way out of the 1 difficulty wha for Pan to go to Canton 16 and notify the Union of bis intention to rejoin the ship and obtain their consent.. Accordingly Pan went, fo Canton that night and on arrival wrote to the Seamen's Union sending at the same time a covering letter" which witness had written.
