The cylinder head, instead of being rigid, is a small, separate piston, operated by an overhead crankshaft, and, on the exbaust stroke, this upper piston moves down to meet the upward thrust of the driving piston, reducing the the space of the combustion cham- ber, to a minimum, forcing out burnt gas.

Returning to its position on the induction stroke, the overbend piston helps, to suck in the fresh charge, and does not move during compression and combustion.

Theoretically, the scavenging idea is sound in a low-compression motor; but actually it would pro- bubly prove merely another outlet for compression, because movement causes friction, and friction causes wear.
