A PARIS SHOP.
WHEN EAST MEETS WEST.
I was interested to read of a new shop which has been opened. in Shanghai by two or three Chinese girls.". It is in many ways a typic- ally western woman's shop where Lempting dresses, shoes and acces- sories are displayed in an artistic fashion, but the clients are Chinese ladies who realise the beauty of their traditional costume.
Chinese clothes have charmed the west, and fashionable ladies in Paris and London, and the wealthy stars of Hollywood, ure wearing them as negligee, and, to a certain extent modifying western fashions to their design. How long this Oriental influence will last or how far 1 will go, it is impossible to decide, nor can not tell whether the East will be westernised before the women of Europe and America But take to oriental garments. this new venture opens up a differ- ent avenue, and for the East, we, 'think, a,better one.
Foreign dens of chic are being combined with the traditional Chin- ese dress, by these Chinese girls who have studied dress making and designing in Paris. The "ad- vanced Chinese girl will find in their showrooms clothes which are becoming to her social beauty. which in the majority European dress is not, and yet be freed from the burden of tradition.
The eye of the dress designer has been wandering round the Zoo. Some years ago rabbila werd seized upon, dyed, clipped, curled and otherwise transformed into leopards, seals and ermine. el and early last winter, the worship of the calf was revived in the temples of dress. COLOUR IN THE HOME.
THE CHOICE OF A SCHEME.
In deciding the colour scheme of of room several points must be taken into consideration. First and foremost, what is the purpose of the room? That the boudoir, the dining-room, the bed-room and the nursery, serve different purposes is obvious, and it is scarcely less obvious that they need in conse- quent different decorative schemes, yet this fact is often overlooked.
Freedom Or Slavery?
Unless you are prepared to be the slave of your house, and to subject your children and your husband to the same slavery you must arrange for your decorative schemes to be comfortable and labour saving. White paint, for instance, seems very appropriate for a nursery: it suggests youth and innocence. Yet let us face the fact that a healthy happy child is more often grubby. than fresh and clean, and the paint reflects the child! Red used to be considered correct for dining-room, but its dark and enclosing effect seems more in keeping with the over eating of the Victorians than with the dainty meals on which we pride ourselves to-day.
Modern women are revolting not so much against the slavery of the house as against the slavery of its decorations. Paint and brass which need constant cleaning, or fault finding, ornaments which entail dusting and conventional colour and furnishing schemes which suit neither health, taste por exchequer, are becoming happily a thing of the past.
Situation.
As much depends on the situation as on the purpose of the room. The windows will generally give the clue to what is needed in the colour scheme. Do they look out on a lovely scene they must be emphasis- cd so that one's eye is led to look out of them. The badly situ- ated room, and there are many, must be self contained, and à sense of space and freedom suggested in the room itself; so that the window is merely an ingress for air and not an important factor in the decorative scheme. There are again dark and light rooms where the entering.sun must be either cnccur- aged or artificially simulated or toned to prevent a glare.

MEN AND MATCHES.
Women. have learnt to smoke without affectation, and to add shagreen cigarette-cases, amber holders and "rings, gauds, trifles connected with and conceita" smoking to the list of little luxuries which so soon become necessities, but they have not learnt to steal matches. That remains a culine prerogative.

Men begin to steal matches from the time they are old enough to want to play with fire. School- boys pick them up automatically, for the homely boxes slip so easily into a jacket pocket, and would soon make an unsightly bulge in the pocket of the most practical coatee. Women tailored suede buy their own matches, in flat cases of an appropriately smaller size, or sport a silver lighter, or get a light from, a friend.
One girl takes the precaution of going round her flat on an evening. when a mixed party is expected, and storing the matches in a safe one box out for place, leaving
