The Ubique Amateur Orchestra also gave the troupe of entertain-1 era much assistance by their over- ture selections and their item daring the interval,

"The Revellers" greeted the audience with their opening choris "Smiles", and from this first num- ber until the final contribution the artistes all acquilted themselves well. Their individual or collec- tive numbers were received with such enthusiasm that several en- cores had to be given, and even then the more fastidious of the audience were still left unsatis fied.

The Highland dances by the. Misses L. and D. Tollan and Lance Corporal Yates and Piper Davidson, were the outstanding hits of the evening, while the "Rev." 10, B. Good" (Mr. W. J. Geall) also gave some popular contributions.

The individual items by Mr. Wolgemuth ("Mother Machree"). Mrs. W. R. Fleming (selected song), Mr. J. Grenham (comic songs), Mr. F. C. Clemo ("It's only a Fay Garden"), which in most cases were followed by encores, were loudly applauded.

Each performer was accorded an enthusiastic reception on his or her appearance in the second part of the programme, which was con- cluded with a concerted numbor by the entire party.

SERIOUS HANKOW

FRACAS.

Hankow, Sept. 21. There was a fracas in the ex-British Concession yester- day evening when a cang, arm- et with automaties, success- fully rescued a uniformed pri- soner believed to be a Com- unit leader who was arrest- ed on a Japanese steamer. He way rescued from a Chinese escort when passing through one of the most crowded thoroughfares; of. Hankow.

The gang opened fire at point blank range and the escort re-

plied. A number of passers- "by were killed and wounded. The prisoner escaped in the confusion, but several of the rang were taken prisoner.

Martial law. has been pro- claimed and the streets bar- ricaded and heavily patrolled by military.

There is no doubt that a well-organised Communist

group is conspiring against the Wuhan Government.

A This morning, the Japanese removed 50 Chinese soldiers from a Nishen Kisen Kaisha steamer, disarming them and holding them under arrest, pending the arrival of á Chi- nese squad. On arrival of the latter a Japanese sentry at the Japanese: Concession was wounded in the neck by a Chinese; bayoriet and fired in self-defence. This was fol- lowed by machine gun fire, resulting in one bolng killed and a few wounded.

The situation eased down to normál later.

His Worship spoke of Nathan Road being a thoroughfare which there was a lot of traffic owing to its being the main road to the Territories as well as being the math, street on the Peninsula. There were houses on both sides and at various points, side streets ran into Nathan Road.

His Worship therefore held that the defendant's speed was a danger to the public and imposed a line bf $25.

THEATRE ROYAL.

LAST NIGHT & SUCCESS.

There was a much better au- dience at the Theatro Royal last evening when the very humorous farce "Nothing But The Truth" was presented by the Forbes-Rus- sell Comedy Company. The show proved to be one of the most en- joyable given by this talented Company, and the whole audience thoroughly revelled in the "go" and swing of what is really an vnusually funny play.

First praise must of course be given to Mr. Leonard S. Stephens, who

mun as "Bob," the

who wagers to speak the truth for 24 hours, was an outstanding su coes. He has played leads with great capabilities in most of the pieces so far put on, but last night he was in even better form and was deservedly the recipient of much appreciation. Miss Vivian April. made a captivating "qutey"-a small but difficult pārt. Mr. Lynwood Roberts, Miss Beryi Sidney, Mr. Charles Brailley, Mr. Forbes Russell, Mr. Claude Fas coe, Miss Ninette Raymond and Miss Grace Ray all gasisted to make the presentation "the great success it proved to be.

This evening, the mystery play "In the Next Room" is being given..
