STRANGE TALES OF SUICIDE.

STORY OF A WOMAN'S PERSISTENCE.

---------

·MAN'S SECOND ATTEMPT

At 9.30 last night' a Chinese woman, middle-aged, jumped into the harbour from the Book On Wharf, at the Praya, with the in- tention of committing suicide, states the vernacular press. As the current was strong at the mo-. ment nobody was brave enough to jump into the water to rescue her when the alarm was given Later, a Chinese, the owner of sampan No. 2367, dived into the water, and remained there for about 30 minutes, searching for: the body of the woman, but it could not be found.

In this connexion, the local ver- nacular press refers to the num ber of cases of suicide among Chinese recently, and recounts the following interesting cases.

Second Attempt Succeeds. " It is stated that a young Chin ese boarded the s.s. Charles Har- douin last Friday afternoon at Canton. When the vessel was ap- proaching Capsuimun, some fokis entered the man's cabin to collect the money for his food; but they were told that he had not the available money for the bill at that moment. Later, the men on board the ship again entered his cabin, and the man was not to be found.

On the table, says the report, was found a letter written by him, addressed to a woman living at Hollywood Road. The letter stated that on' Friday the "writer took an overdose of sleeping, pow- der, with the intention of com- mitting suicide But his plan proved to be fruitless, for he slept for about 28 hours, and

A Persistent Woman.

However, a curious account is given of another case from the Charles Hardouin on the same trip, when a Chinese woman at- tempted the same thing. She was a"young woman, well dressed, and with bobbed hair. She shut her- self up during most part of the voyage, staying inside her cabin. About 8 o'clock in the evening she was seen sitting on the railing by-

the side of the vessel. A man on board the boat approached her and told her to get down. The min then became suspicious of this woman's desiring to end her life, and he told the incident to other members of the crew.

After that the woman was close. ly watched. When the boat ar rived in the. Colony, she was seen to remain on the ship without at- tempting to leave. She was asked by the men on board why he did not leave, and about 11 o'clock ahe left, taking a ricksha for Wanchai. Two men belonging to the reascl, out of curiosity, followed the wo- man.
