THE CHALLENGE ROUND.

The possibility of the Davis Cup becoming the property of new holders has never been more bright during the last five years as it is this year. France has made won- derful progress in the sphere of tennis since the War and there is much speculation in America and abroad as to whether the holders. will be able to retain the Cup for another year.

After gaining from the Australians in 1920, the Americans have never, during the subsequent years, been really seri- ously challenged and they have been victorious for the past seven years. The exclusion of Vincent Richards, who is not eligible to play in the Davis Cup contests by virtues of his professional status, has this the somewhat weakened year American team.

The French players had little dif- ficulty in qualifying to meet the holders in the challenge round. During the 27 years that the Cup had been competed for, France has never, however, been the possessors of that much coveted trophy.

America have been the holders on eleven occasions, Australasia seven and the British Isles five, there being no competition from 1915 to 1918.

to estimate club prospects, but with everything in their favour, it is probable that the army "teams will establish a "corner in the leading positions. Of the civilian club, the Chinese Athletic and the Club de Recreio may be expected to give a good account of themselves, while the Police are somewhat akin to the new entrants, "dark harges."

Much more Senior football than. formerly will be seen on the main- land this season. Onc of the U.S.R.C. hockey pitches has been converted for football, and on many Saturdays, three out of five Senior games will be played in.

Governor after last Sunday's matches:-

It is charged that the city has done nothing for sports. The few publie recention grounds that exist are in a deplorable condition. In the annual inter-scholastic track meets held in "late years the Manila public schools have always failed to score even a point in the track meets. This is cited as a proof of the deplorable condition of athletics in the city. As yet, there is no public football field in the city, despite the fact that foot- ball has been one of the island's weak points at the Olympic games. Besides his admitted executive ability, Mr. Cuyugan would do much for the local sports, it is said.
